History
Selfridges was founded in 1909 by Harry Gordon Selfridge. He began his retailing career in the United States working for Field, Leitner & Co which was famous chain of department stores in Chicago. Harry was a forward thinker and originally proposed the concept of January sales whereby stores would sell items at much lower prices to reduce stock levels at the end of the holiday season, He was also the originator for the well known phrase of “the customer is always right”.
Selfridge hoped to become a senior partner at the firm however he was denied the role. With no opportunity to progress in the company he decided to leave the US and at the age of 50 he moved to London. At the time, Oxford Street was considered “dead end” however selfridge saw its potential and purchased a piece of property for £400,000. The Selfridge department store first opened its doors in 1909 and was seen as a British retailing revolution. Although the department store concept was conceived in the UK during the early 1800’s, by the end of that century the rest of Europe and the U.S had over taken Britain in the retailing industry.
Selfridges represented a huge leap forward in retail technology and at the time it was considered the world's largest department store. The huge complex not only had a huge range of products to browse but shoppers also had access to a library, post office, and rooftop garden. In 1913 Selfridges introduced further innovations such as a nursery where customers could leave their children while they browsed the store, they also started giving away free Christmas puddings to bus drivers, thus encouraging them to stop and passengers to enter the shop.
Harry Selfridge enjoyed great success with his store and in 1921 he took the business public. Towards the end of the 1920’s Selfridges introduced a department for showcasing the new invention of TV, it was the first store to do so. The company ran into financial difficulties during the 1929 stock market crash and 1930’s depression, the outbreak of the 2nd World War only added to the problems. The company was sold to Lewis’s Investment Trust for £3.4 million. Harry Selfridge retired in 1941 and died of bronchial pneumonia in 1947 at the age of 89.
In 1965, Lewis’ s sold Selfridges to the Sears Group, owned by Charles Clore a successful retail magnate who built up a huge chain of shoe stores. During the 1970’s, Sears invested heavily into Selfridges such as building the 4 star hotel located at the rear of the store, refurbishing its restaurant, and adding a five hundred space carpark to the complex. Despite numerous attempts to modernise the building throughout the 1980’s, Sears struggled to counter the “dowdy” image associated with the department store.
Sears Holdings separated Selfridges from Lewi’s In 1990 and placed the latter into administration the following year. September 1998 saw the demerger from Sears and also the opening of a brand new department store at the Trafford Centre, Manchester. In 2002, An additional store opened at Exchange Square in Manchester’s city centre, the company expanded further in 2003 by opening a 260,000 sq foot department store at the Bull Ring, Birmingham. Later that year the chain was purchased by English-Canadian businessman Galen Weston for £598 million, it would join Holt Renfrew of Canada, de Bijenkork of the Netherlands, and Brown Thomas of Ireland as part of the Selfridges Group.

Returns & Refunds
You can return an item within 28 days of delivery providing the goods are in their original packaging, unused, and in a resellable condition.
Selfridges offer the following returns options:
- Return to any Selfridges store: Take your delivery note with the item you would like to return or exchange to the store, and confirm to the member of staff that you purchase the goods online. Please ensure you also bring with you the payment card (unless payment was via gift card, e-voucher, or PayPal) used to make the purchase. Your refund will be issued to your payment card within 5 days, if you used a gift card, e-voucher, or PayPal your refund will be issued to a gift card.
- Return via Royal Mail or courier - Step 1: Confirm you reason(s) for return on the delivery note by selecting the relevant code. Securely pack your items, then peel off the returns label and attach it to the front of your parcel. Please ensure the items are returned to Selfridges within 28 days of delivery so they can identify the items and process your refund.
- Step 2: You can return via any Royal Mail post office, please return the items as soon as you decide they are no longer required and request a proof of postage at the post office. For items worth more than £250, Selfridges recommend that you use their complimentary collection service. To arrange a collection please contact the Selfridges Customer Services team on 0800 123 400.
