The Company's founder Jesse Boot, was born in Nottingham in 1850, he was the only son of John and Mary Boot. Jesse’s interest of herbs and remedies grew from an early age, he would spend hours walking through the fields around Nottingham collecting herbs in his wheelbarrow and take them back to his father John who would create home remedies with Jesse to sell in the family shop.
John passed away in 1860 when Jesse was just ten years old leaving Mary to take over the running of the shop with the help of Jesse. Over the next few years he would help out in the shop after school and when finally left school began running the business on his own. In 1883 Jesse incorporated his business as Boot and Company Limited, he began selling pharmaceutical products and also cut the price of prescriptions to 50% of his competitors. He opened new stores in Sheffield and Lincoln, each with an in house fully trained pharmacist, it was the beginning of how modern-day Boots would look.
The company saw impressive growth in the early 1900’s which led to Jesse being Knighted in 1909. Sales continued to rise, passing £2 million in 1911 and hit £2.5 million by 1913, The First World War brought new opportunities for Boots that Jesse was quick to act upon. At the time the business was importing a large number of its pharmaceuticals from Germany, however the outbreak of war saw stocks disappear. It was then he decided to start manufacturing his own pharmaceuticals and employed a team of research chemists. Production at the new facility began in 1915 and by 1918 sales had reached £5 million.
In 1920 Jesse negotiated the sale of his controlling interest in the company to American businessman Louis K Liggett who owned a chain of U.S drug stores for £2.27 million. Jesse remained as titular chairman until retiring in 1926. He was made Lord Trent in 1929 and later died at his Jersey home in 1931.
Jesse’s son John Boot took over as chairman in 1933, and in the same year the company reached the milestone of opening its 1000th store in Galashiels Scotland, and in 1936 the first store in New Zealand was opened. After the Second World War Boots opened more stores outside of the UK in countries such as Australia, Kenya, Pakistan, Singapore, and South Africa. John Boot retired in 1954 and died in 1956.
In 1967 the company purchased UK competitor Timothy Whites and immediately integrated its retail branches with Boots. The late 1970’s and 1980’s saw several more acquisitions for the business such as Rucker Pharmacol in 1977, and Underwoods Chemists in 1989. The business sold Boots Pharmaceuticals to BASF in 1995 for approximately £850 million which ended its 80 year involvement in the prescription drugs industry.
It was announced on 19th June 2012 that U.S drug store chain Walgreens would buy a 45% stake in Alliance Boots for US$6.7 billion. The deal also gave the option for both organisations to complete a full merger within 3 years for an additional US$9.5 billion. Walgreens took the option to purchase the remaining 55% and on 31st December 2014 both companies merged to form Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc.
