Hennes & Mauritz AB (H&M) was founded by Erling Persson. His vision was to provide fashionable clothes at affordable prices. In 1947 he opened his first store in Sweden called "Hennes". The store exclusively sold women's clothing until 1968 when Persson acquired the hunting equipment retailer Mauritz Widforss. A menswear collection was launched and he changed the company name to "Hennes & Mauritz" (H&M).
The company began to look beyond its Swedish borders and in 1976 it opened stores in the UK. Although the launch of H&M in Britain was limited the business did see better results across the rest of Europe. The late 1970’s also saw a change in leadership for H&M with Erling handing over the reigns to his son Stefan. H&M continued its global expansion throughout the 1980’s opening more stores whilst maintaining full control of the company’s image.
H&M had become one its country's largest retailers by the 1990’s and Sweden's 5th largest company. Towards the end of the 20th century expansion throughout Europe saw approximately 60 stores opening every year. H&M currently has over 3,500 stores in 59 countries around the globe, they also offer online shopping in 21 countries.
