Amazon was founded on July 5 1994 by Jeff Bezos in Seattle, Washington. Amazon.com was initially based in Bezos’s garage, which he converted into a workspace housing three Sun workstations. The Company started out as an online bookstore before later expanding and adding other products to its inventories such as CD’s, DVD’s, electronics, toys, software, household items, apparel and gourmet food; as it’s logo suggests products from A to Z. According to an interview published in Dealerscope magazine, Jeff Bezos mentioned that books were chosen as the first product line due to the amount of selection they offered, he also stated that "I think the main thing that has differentiated Amazon.com from conventional retailers is its obsessive/compulsive focus on the end-to-end customer experience. That includes having the right products, the right selection, and low prices".
Jeff Bezos was seen by co-workers and chroniclers as a visionary, easy going yet someone who kept his employees on demanding schedules, with quick turnaround time for projects and four hour long weekly meetings. Bezos was committed to hiring intelligent and innovative employees, he wanted the best and he rewarded individuals through a Just Do It program, highlighting those who came up with and executed ideas which helped the company, without first seeking permission from their bosses.
Amazon expanded internationally to sites such as Canada, France, United Kingdom and Japan, and is now the most recognised online shop and the world’s largest online retailer with millions of Sellers, Consumers, Content Creators, Enterprises and Developers. Amazon has the mission “to be Earth’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online, and endeavors to offer its customers the lowest possible prices.”
On October 15, 1998 Amazon acquired Bookpages a United Kingdom based online book retailer, with the goal of expanding into the UK and European markets. Bookpages was one of the UK’s largest online bookstores, with over 1.2 million UK books and an impressively fast database. They also offered a customer loyalty scheme, gift wrapping and specific monthly features with the goal of providing customers with the best possible experience.
Amazon launched Amazon Marketplace in November 2000, this allowed other companies or customers to sell books, CD’s, DVD and various other products alongside new items. This Marketplace quickly became the largest of it’s kind, as of October 20014.
In November 2007 Amazon launched the first e-book reader, the Amazon Kindle, using E Ink technology to save on battery consumption and provide legible display. By July 2014 there were over 2.7 million e-books available for purchase at the Kindle Store.

Vendors who sell through Amazon will normally allow you to return most new, unopened, undamaged items within 30 days. Generally any item sold and fulfilled by Amazon.co.uk can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. Amazon’s general returns policy covers most items however some items may have specific policies or requirements about returning which should be available to read before you buy. Amazon also offers replacements and exchanges if your item arrives damaged or if you would like to exchange it for something else, a different size or colour. Items bought from Amazon.co.uk between the 1st of November and the 31st of December can be returned up until the 1st of January. Your refund will usually take between 2 and 3 weeks, approximately 3-5 days after the return is received and processed.

Unfortunately Amazon cannot cancel or change an order for you, so it is recommended you contact the seller directly; one method of doing this is on the Amazon Payments website, Order Summary Page, you will find a Contact Seller button, steps to reach this page are outlined above.
Amazon Payments will not charge till your order has been confirmed as dispatched and when a charge on your card has been placed it cannot then be cancelled, it would require a refund by the seller. Generally refunds are issued based on the payment method for the purchase although in some cases you may be offered and Instant Refund, which will take the form of an immediate payment to your credit card or issued via Amazon.co.uk Gift Card balance; depending on the instant refund type you select. It is worth noting you would still need to return your item within 30 days. You can check the status of the refund by visiting your order summary page, once you have logged into your account.
