History
Marks and Spencer was founded by business partners Sir Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer more than 130 years ago. Michael came to Britain as a Polish refugee with very little money and spoke poor English. He initially worked for a Leeds based company called Barran that employed refugees and while looking for work he met Isaac Jowitt Dewhirst. Marks borrowed £5 from Dewhirst that he used to establish his own stall called “Penny Bazaar” on Kirkgate Market.
As the business grew he approached Isaac Dewhirst to help manage it, however he declined the offer. Isaac recommended Tom Spencer who was working as his cashier at the time. Michael invited Tom to become his business partner, he accepted, and in September 1894 the first Marks and Spencer stall was born.
The pair moved to the Birkenhead open market in 1901 and opened the famous Penny Bazaar stall in 1903 when they were allocated the markets sought after centre isle numbers of 11 and 12. Over the following few years, Michael and Tom opened many stalls throughout the North West and moved their original Kirkdale Market stall to Manchester.
In 1928 the company began selling clothes and food under its own “St Michael” brand, it also introduced a policy of accepting unwanted items for a full cash refund regardless of when the goods were purchased, this was unheard of for the time. By 1950 almost all products were sold under the “St Michael” brand, the exception was the Women's and Girls clothes ranges which were sold under the “St Margaret” label, however all merchandise was eventually sold as “St Michael”.
Michael’s son Simon Marks worked for the company for 56 years and was Chairman up until his death in 1964. The position was then taken over by Michael’s son-in-law Israel Sieff who was Chairman for 4 years. John Salisse was appointed the company Director in 1968. M&S began expanding beyond British shores in 1975 by opening stores in Europe with Ireland following 4 years later.
In 1988, the business acquired American clothing company Brooks Brothers and U.S food chain Kings Super Markets. The financial year of 1997/98 saw peak profits for the company and the online shopping service was launched in 1999. M&S's global expansion continued and in 2007 the largest store outside of the UK was opened in Dubai. As of 2016 the business has 1,306 stores around the world.
