History
The company was founded by Philip Knight in 1962 originally under the name of Blue Ribbon Sports. Knight’s inspiration to start his own company came during a trip to Japan after graduating from business school, he saw huge potential for importing sports products from Japan to compete with the largely German dominated U.S market. Knight visited Japanese running shoe manufacturer Onitsuka Tiger Co to discuss the possibility of importing some of its products to the United States, initially at a small scale. His new Japanese business partners agreed to begin supplying him with their products providing Knight represented an actual company, and Blue Ribbon Sports was created.
Towards the end of 1963, Knight took delivery of 200 pairs of athletic shoes from Onitsuka Tiger Co and began selling them at various running meets in his area. The following year he partnered with former running coach Bill Bowerman who invested $500 into the company. During 1964 BRS sold 1,300 pairs of the Japanese running shoes totalling $8,000 in sales, by 1965 Blue Ribbon Sports had achieved sales of $20,000 and also taken on a full-time employee. The business moved into its own retail space the following year in Santa Monica, California.
By the end of the 1960’s, BRS had expanded to a number of stores with sales approaching $300,000 and 20 members of staff. Despite the successful start to the company, Knight grew frustrated with the lack funds to expand further and in 1971 he secured sufficient investment from Japanese firm Nissho Iwai so that RBS could begin manufacturing its own product line using overseas independant businesses. The company introduced its new brand name Nike and the first product to be sold was a pair of soccer boots which included the iconic swoosh logo.
After the first year of manufacturing its own Nike branded products, the company achieved sales of $1.96 million and had increased its staff levels to 45. Further expansion continued with operations reaching Canada followed by Australia, the company’s first 2 foreign markets. Manufacturing from the United States began in 1974 with the opening of a new plant in Exeter, New Hampshire. By the end of the year, global sales had approached $5 million with employee numbers swelling to 250.
The company’s exposure really began to hit new heights when successful sportsmen such as Jimmy Connors, and Ilie Nastase started wearing Nike tennis shoes. The Olympic Trials in 1976 also saw a number of talented young athletes wearing Nike shoes. The growing popular popularity for the brand was reflected in Nike’s sales, reaching $28 million in 1977. New manufacturing plants were opened in Korea and Taiwan to cope with demand, the same year also saw the Nike brand introduced to Asia with European distribution commencing in 1978.
By the turn of the decade Nike had overtaken German rival Adidas AG with its innovative designs and intelligent marketing strategies. The company went public in December 1980 with 2 million shares of stock offered. Nike used the generated revenue to focus on expansion in Europe, back in the U.S a brand new headquarters and rural campus were built. In 1982 Nike supplied European Cup and English First Division winners Aston Villa with footwear in a successful bid to promote the company's new soccer boot in the UK.
Nike expanded its range of products during the 1980’s embracing numerous sports across the globe. The company moved into its huge World HQ campus located at Beaverton, Oregon in 1990. Nike began selling its products online in early 1999, later that year the company sponsored the women's USA soccer team who went on to win the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Nike chairman Philip Knight announced in 2015 that he intended to leave his position in 2016.
