History

Simply Be is part of the N Brown Group plc, James David Williams founded the oldest company within the group (J D Williams) back in 1859. James originally sold clothes to customers from his three mobile shops, however in 1882 he introduced a mail order service by utilising the Post Office’s parcel delivery services, this was unheard of for the time. The new business model of delivering high quality, stylish clothing at affordable prices directly to customers proved to be very popular, and by 1884 the growing business had relocated to Watling Street, Manchester.

In 1927, J D Williams became a private company and achieved year on year growth through the mid 1900’s. Cooper-Taymil Ltd, who were a subsidiary for Alliance Brothers Ltd, purchased the Williams family shares in 1963. The company made the highly significant acquisition of fashion mail order giant Ambrose Wilson in 1969 which was the largest company of its kind at the time. In 1970 Sir David Alliance fully acquired JD Williams and moved the company into his property business N Brown Group plc.

The following two decades saw continued growth for the business with several more companies purchased. N Brown’s main customer base up to the late 1980’s had been women aged 50 and over, however in Spring 1990 the company introduced Fashion World - a new catalogue that would focus on the younger age group of 30 to 45. In 1994 the company launched new collection Classic Combination, which was available for women aged between 30 and 50. The new range focused on clothes that fitted well and was a result of a survey carried out to establish the shape of modern women.

N Brown acquired Sartor in 1996, which enabled them to expand into the clothing market for ladies 60 plus. The company had enjoyed great success from its Fashion World catalogue and in 1999 Simply Be was introduced to compliment Fashion World and target the younger generation of women's fashion in larger sizes at affordable prices. In 2001, the group expanded its product portfolio with the introduction of Inspirational Homes and Home Essentials catalogues that offered electrical and household products to customers.

Simply Yours was launched in 2002 to provide a vast range of gorgeous lingerie and shapewear in feminine designs and colours with cup sizes A to K, and back sizes between 28 & 50 to choose from. Later that year saw the opening of Martin House - an impressive call centre in Manchester, large enough to comfortably seat 1500 staff. In 2004 the business relocated from its long term Head Office in Dale Street to a modern office at Griffin House, situated in the centre of Manchester. The group made another acquisition in November 2004 of mail order company House of Bath, which would mainly focus on their older customer base.

N Brown Group purchased big and tall menswear retailer High and Mighty in 2009, the same year also saw a big step of expansion beyond the UK and Ireland with the introduction of a German version of Simply Be. The group took an exciting new direction in 2011 with the opening of the first Simply Be store located in central Liverpool. Following the success of Simply Be’s introduction to the high street, the Jacamo brand was incorporated into the same store. 2011 also saw the launch of Simply Be in the United States.

In 2012 the Group’s Chairman, Lord Alliance of Manchester CBI, stepped down after 49 years of service, he would remain as a member of the board and a major shareholder. In September 2012, Andrew Higginson replaced Lord Alliance as the group's Chairman. It was also announced that the company’s Chief Executive Alan White would be retiring after a 25 year career with the business. Angela Spindler was appointed Chief Executive in 2013, her vision for the company was to focus heavily on transforming Simply Be, JD Williams, and Jamaco into global power brands.
