History
The company was founded by John Lewis, the first small shop was opened in London’s Oxford Street in 1864, he was just 28 years of age at the time. The early days of the business were a struggle, however the shop began to be more successful when John decided to change his product line from fabrics, ribbons, and threads to offering ready-made clothes, shoes, and hats. His company policy was to clearly display prices to his customers, a move that was uncommon for the time. He also believed in selling his vast range of products at low competitive prices with small margins.
Sales continued to grow and in 1875 the company began taking over buildings close to the property in Oxford Street for extra storage space. The expansion also allowed Lewis to broaden the stores product ranges to include china, carpets, and household furniture. Turnover sales tripled during this period and continued to rise throughout the 1880’s. By 1895 the company had around 150 staff, John was also in a position to begin rebuilding the entire store, and completed refurbishment resulted in six floors of selling space with beautiful Renaissance style architecture.
In 1905, the opportunity to open a 2nd store arose when long standing business rival Peter Jones passed away. His department store, of the same name, was located 2 miles from the John Lewis store. Lewis decided to purchase Jones’s controlling stake in the business and took on the role as chairman. The investment proved to be a costly one for Lewis and the store began to drop sales quickly, the company also saw no profits for a 6 year period. In 1914 Lewis handed over the Peter Jones business, including its shares, to his son John Spedan Lewis. He began implementing his new ideas such as sales incentives, pay improvements, and also committees were introduced to discuss new ideas. The changes proved to be very successful and by 1919 Peter Jones was making large profits.
Spedan make further changes to his store in 1920 by implementing a profit share scheme, employees would also receive a weekly magazine that gave information on sales and profits, from that point staff became known as partners. 1925 saw the famous “Never Knowingly Undersold” slogan introduced, it was also incorporated by the John Lewis Partnership and still used today. By 1926 Spedan was in control of both stores and after his father's death in 1928 he quickly began implementing the Peter Jones business model into the John Lewis store.
The company’s expansion increased rapidly during the 1930’s with the acquisition of many stores, which included the purchase of ten Waitrose stores. By 1939, turnover for the business had reached £3 million. Further expansion was put on hold during the 1940’s due to the outbreak of World War 2, John Lewis also suffered serious damage to some of its buildings from bombing raids, including its main department store in London. The rapid expansion of the Waitrose chain really took shape during the 1950’s and 60’s with the introduction of supermarkets, by 1974 the company had opened 50 stores with another 20 over the next five years.
By the late 1980’s the business had reached peak profits of £131 million before tax, with £47 million of the total shared amongst the partnerships employees. The Waitrose chain reached a milestone in 1992 with the opening of its 100th supermarket, and by 1999 that number had increased to over 130 outlets. Huge investment occurred in 2004 with the renovation of the Peter Jones store at a cost of £107 million, a further £60 million was spent on the refurbishment of the flagship Oxford Street department store in late 2007. John Lewis currently has 45 UK stores and over 38,000 employees.
