History
Matalan was established in 1985 by John Hargreaves. He was a successful market trader in the 1970’s but his life changed after taking a trip to the United States in the early 1980’s. During his vacation in the US he became fascinated by the concept of retail warehouses that were located outside of towns and offered large discounts. On his return to the UK he set out to try the idea himself and in 1985 he opened his first Matalan store in Preston.
His initial store was a success and by 1995 the company had expanded to 50 stores around the UK. A further 12 new stores were opened by 1998 and the business was listed on the London Stock Exchange under the symbol MTN. In 2000, the company announced that it would be continuing with its aggressive growth strategy of opening larger stores, increasing the floor space in its existing stores and relocating the ones under 10,000 square feet to new locations.
In 2010, a proposed buyout of the business failed as the interested parties could not reach the £1.5 billion valuation that John Hargreaves had placed on the company. After the breakdown of the buyout, Hargreaves made plans to invest more money into the brand. Matalan now has 217 stores across the country and has also opened stores in other countries such as the UAE, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.

Returns & Refunds
If you decide that you no longer want your purchased items you can return them within 28 days of delivery. You can return items either to a store or send them by post.
Please note: Matalan do not offer an exchange service by post.
Due to reasons of hygiene safety, health, and copyright, the following items cannot be exchanged or refunded once worn or the packaging has been opened or damaged unless the goods are of unsatisfactory quality or unfit for purpose:
- Hats
- Cosmetics/fragrances
- Pierced earrings
- DVD’s (in original packaging with any security seals still intact)
- Pillows
- Duvets
- Quilts
- Control wear
- Hosiery
- Confectionary
- Underwear and shapewear (for hygiene reasons please don not remove briefs when trying on garments)
