History
In 1948, Bernard Lewis began selling fruit and vegetables, he then sold knitting wool from a bombed-out site in the East End of London. He named the business Lewis Separates and expanded the chain with his three brothers to nine stores.
Impressively by 1965, Lewis Separates had 70 stores in the UK. At this time the King’s Road in Chelsea was a very popular place in the fashion industry so they decided a new identity was needed for the business. They chose the name Chelsea Girl, which became the first fashion boutique chain in the UK.
Bernard and David Lewis were left in charge of Chelsea Girl after two of the brothers left the business in the late 70s. They decided to form the Lewis Trust Group where by Bernard would run the retail operation, leaving David to run the other businesses covering investments, property and hotels. In 1982 the business expanded into menswear with the launch of Concept Man stores. Chelsea Girl was merged with Concept Man stores in 1988 to become one retail under the name of River Island.
In 1993 River Island opened its first shop in Republic of Ireland. The company has subsequently expanded into further markets including Poland, Russia and various Middle Eastern countries.
